City University of Macau Secures New Fundings from the China National Arts Fund

Recently, after thorough evaluations by experts from the China National Arts Fund and subsequent approval by the National Arts Fund Council, the "List of 2025 Annual Funding Projects of the China National Arts Fund" was officially announced. Associate Professor Po-Hsun Wang from the Faculty of Innovation and Design (FIAD) at City University of Macau (CityU) led his research team to successfully secure funding for the project titled "Revival of Macau's Splendor - Delicately Depicting the Image of Mountains, Sea, and City" under the Fine Arts Creation category. Additionally, Assistant Professor Jing Liu from FIAD led her team to apply for the "Qin-Ao Integration: Urban Public Art and Cultural Tourism Creative Talent Training Project" under the Art Talent Training category. Following CityU's first successful funding application from the National Arts Fund in 2024, the approval of these two projects marks another significant achievement for the university in securing funding from the China National Arts Fund, reflecting its ongoing commitment to advancing design and arts disciplines. Among 1,386 applications for art talent training projects, 135 were approved, yielding a success rate of approximately 9.74%. For fine arts organization creation projects, out of 148 applications, 12 were approved, with a success rate of about 8.11%.

The "Revival of Macau's Splendor - Delicately Depicting the Image of Mountains, Sea, and City" project aims to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the People's Republic of China and the 25th anniversary of Macau's return to China. Led by the Faculty of Innovation and Design, this project brings together teams of artists from both mainland China and Macau to intricately depict the unique landscape of Macau’s mountains, sea, and city through watercolor (gouache) paintings infused with characteristics of traditional Chinese painting, effectively narrating the "Macau Story." The project will host exhibitions, seminars, and creative workshops to establish a platform for interaction between artists and the public, promoting the widespread dissemination and exchange of culture and art. Associate Professor Wang Po-Hsun, the project leader, stated that the approval represents not only recognition of the team’s hard work but also a vital boost to the development of culture and art in Macau. The project focuses on four key aspects: "mountains, sea, city, and image," aiming to foster artistic innovation through collaborative creation and showcase the harmonious beauty of Macau’s history, modernity, nature, and humanity. Following approval, the project team will actively prepare for various activities and build exchange platforms to further the prosperity and growth of Macau’s cultural and artistic landscape.

The "Qin-Ao Integration: Urban Public Art and Cultural Tourism Creative Talent Training Project" aims to enhance the soft power of the Qin-Ao cities by promoting the integrated development of cultural tourism and public art through the innovative "Hengqin + Macau" model. Using Hengqin as the fulcrum and Macau as the driving force, the project is dedicated to enhancing ecological cultural tourism experiences and nurturing a group of creative talents focused on urban public art and cultural tourism development within the Hengqin-Macau spatial context. Assistant Professor Liu Jing, the project leader, emphasized that the successful approval of this project highlights the country's significant attention to the cultural integration of Macau and Hengqin, providing unprecedented opportunities for artistic talent from both regions. The project aims to deepen collaboration between the two cities through artistic interventions in cultural tourism, exploring new pathways for the cultural spirit of Qin-Ao. After approval, the project team will fully commit to ensuring the smooth implementation of various training programs and contribute to the cultivation of talent in Qin-Ao's integrated cultural tourism and artistic creation.

The China National Arts Fund, along with the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the National Social Science Fund of China, is recognized as one of the "Three Major National Funds" in the cultural and artistic field of China, representing the highest level of funding support for artistic creation projects. The fund aims to promote original artistic research and creation, develop and promote outstanding works, cultivate artistic talent, and foster the healthy development of national arts. Since 2021, the China National Arts Fund has been fully accessible to Hong Kong and Macau for general project applications, reflecting an important policy initiative by the central government to support the development and construction of literature and art in these regions. In 2025, a total of ten projects submitted by Macao's literary and artistic institutions and artists were selected for funding.
