The Craft Laboratory

FIAD aims to implement the teaching objectives of design creativity and aesthetic practice, enhance the level of design education at the University of Macau, and support the Macao SAR government's strategy for the development of the creative design industry. To align with the existing research and teaching needs in design arts, urban planning, and design, FIAD has established and completed the construction of the " Craft Laboratory".

The Craft Laboratory is centered on design practice and technical operations, integrating the requirements of various design professions. It emphasizes the cultivation of students' technical appreciation and practical skills. Through hands-on activities, students gain a comprehensive experience of the materials, structures, craftsmanship, and aesthetics of design works. By combining traditional and innovative technological tools, students create design projects from different disciplines, enhancing their overall perception of design through practical experience. This is a necessary foundation for training excellent designers and an important means for FIAD to embody the "craftsmanship" spirit. Additionally, the Craft Laboratory also serves as a showcase for design works.

The primary service direction of the Craft Laboratory is to provide a space and platform for experimental teaching and creative research for the design arts faculty and students, as well as those interested in design studies. Currently, based on the characteristics of the curriculum, the Craft Laboratory is divided into four specialized laboratories and an exhibition hall. The four specialized laboratories are the "Metalworking Laboratory," "Woodworking Laboratory," "Digital Fabrication Laboratory (3D Printing, Laser Cutting)," and "Printmaking Studio." The laboratory can provide the necessary conditions for model making for nearly all design arts courses and urban planning and design courses.

Moreover, the Craft Laboratory is not only an open teaching space but also offers essential research and experimental services for relevant faculty and researchers, forming a comprehensive platform that integrates teaching, research, and practice. The goal is to maximize the potential and functionality of the workshop, further enhancing the quality of design education at the university and the research and innovation capabilities of the team.
