Program Overview

Background and Features
Macau as a city where Chinese and Western cultures converge, offers a unique and broad perspective for the arts. Under the guidance of the central government's policy of promoting moderate economic diversification in Macau, the Special Administrative Region government has been actively developing the cultural and arts industry in recent years. City University of Macau strongly advocates the concept of Chinese cultural education, which closely integrates arts education with Chinese culture, forming its own characteristics and advantages. As an extension of its successful educational model, the PhD Program in Arts at the School of Innovative Design was approved in November 2018. This program aims to create an ideal platform for artistic collision and exchange, improve and perfect the training system for artistic talents in Macau, and cultivate high-level, applied artistic talents and research talents who can meet the needs of social, economic, cultural, and artistic development. This program is highly practical, and graduates have broad employment prospects.

 

Objectives
This program emphasizes a balance between theoretical knowledge and artistic practice, professional education and quality education, and basic skills and innovative abilities. It aims to cultivate high-level artistic talents with a solid foundation in artistic disciplines, comprehensive knowledge and literacy, considerable artistic appreciation abilities, and artistic research capabilities. These talents will possess an artistic perspective and innovative ideas.

 

Research Category

【The Study of Chinese Art History and Chinese Painting Theory】

This field is based in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, combining Chinese art history with art theory. It is rooted in the study of traditional Chinese culture and ethnic arts from a global perspective, while also paying moderate attention to the local context of Macau. Addressing new cultural and artistic issues in the era of globalization, this field aims to cultivate talent in art history and theory who possess a profound understanding of traditional culture, contemporary vision, innovative thinking, and practical skills. Graduates will be equipped to engage in teaching and research at various educational institutions, plan and operate exhibitions, conduct cultural heritage surveys and studies, and work in cultural and artistic criticism and exchange.

 

The Study of Art Education

The field of art education is grounded in the theory and history of visual arts, using the intellectual model of art cognition and understanding as a focal point. Supported by educational theories and methods, it aims to cultivate professionals with a broad historical and cultural perspective, familiarity with the fundamental principles of artistic creation, and proficiency in art education knowledge and methods. Graduates will be equipped to excel in educational and management institutions at all levels, as well as cultural and artistic organizations, capable of engaging in teaching, educational research, educational innovation, and art criticism within the realm of visual arts education.

 

The Study of Chinese Music History

The field of Chinese music history employs research methods from musicology, music anthropology, and music systematics, integrating music theory, cultural values, and philosophical significance for comprehensive exploration. It focuses on the interaction and integration of music techniques, art, and academic scholarship across various levels. This field aims to cultivate music scholars who possess both theoretical and practical skills, as well as research capabilities, contributing academic strength and cultural influence to the Greater Bay Area and the nation.
