Professor Dai Dingcheng from City University of Macau was invited by Nanjing Academy of Arts to give a wonderful lecture at the "Hongyi Lecture Hall"

On the evening of October 24, 2024 at 19:30, Mr. Dai Dingcheng, a senior professor at the School of Innovation and Design of the City University of Macau and a renowned musicologist and composer in China, was invited to the "Hongyi Lecture Hall" at the School of Music of Nanjing University of the Arts to give an academic lecture on the topic of "European Renaissance and Early Music Works and Their Styles" to the faculty and students of Nanjing University of the Arts. This lecture was hosted by Wang Xiaojun, Dean of the School of Music at Nanjing University of the Arts, with enthusiastic participation from teachers and students of Nanjing University of the Arts.

Professor Dai Dingcheng graduated from Shanghai Conservatory of Music in his early years and obtained a doctoral degree in composition technology theory. He was the first Chinese and acoustic doctor in China and served as the first dean of the School of Music at Shanghai Normal University. He is currently a professor and doctoral supervisor at the City University of Macau. He has written more than ten specialized works in Chinese, English, and Portuguese, and has published over a hundred literary theories in Chinese, English, Japanese, and Portuguese. Professor Dai Dingcheng, with his profound academic accumulation and cutting-edge music theory, presented a profound and easy to understand journey of Renaissance music to the teachers and students present during his lecture at Nanjing University of the Arts. The entire lecture not only provided an in-depth interpretation of early European Renaissance music works and their styles from the perspective of music history, but also had both academic rationality and humanistic qualities, reflecting the fruitful achievements of Professor Dai Dingcheng's long-term cultivation, bringing new research concepts and perspectives to teachers and students, and benefiting everyone greatly.

Professor Dai Dingcheng's lecture is divided into three exciting parts. Firstly, he provided a detailed explanation of the time span and historical stages of the European Renaissance, and delved into the evolution of musical forms from single voice Gregorian chant to multi voice Oganon. Through the display of ancient scores, he meticulously sorted out the different forms of Oganon. Secondly, Professor Dai conducted an in-depth analysis of ritual music in the early Renaissance, defining singing forms such as regular masses and specific masses in mass music. By analyzing the works of representative composers, he revealed the development of music works in the early Renaissance from the perspectives of harmony, counterpoint, imitation, and other creative theories. Finally, Professor Dai emphasized the fundamental role of music sensory experience in academic research, believing that rational research cannot be separated from the support of music sensory experience.

After the lecture, the on-site teachers and students had lively questions and exchanges on topics such as vocal singing techniques, the origin of instrumental performance, the development of beat marks in music notation, and the inheritance of ancient music in Macau. Professor Xie Kun from the vocal department specifically raised questions about the relationship between sacred singing techniques and European bel canto singing art. Professor Dai's answers further deepened everyone's understanding of the music style and singing techniques of the European Renaissance period, and the atmosphere at the scene was lively.

During the lecture period, Professor Dai Dingcheng also presented two academic works to the School of Music at Nanjing University of the Arts. Wang Xiaojun, the dean of the School of Music at Nanjing University of the Arts, accepted the donated books on behalf of the school and awarded Professor Dai Dingcheng a certificate of book collection. The successful hosting of Professor Dai Dingcheng's lecture at Nanjing University of the Arts is a valuable achievement of academic exchanges between renowned scholars from our university and well-known universities in mainland China. It is of great significance for promoting cultural exchanges and cooperation between our university and art universities in mainland China, and enhancing the academic influence of City University of Macau at home and abroad.
