On September 24, 2024, 16 doctoral students from Macao City University's Faculty of Innovation and Design, led by our Deputy Dean Po-Hsun WANG and Associate Professor Liu Haiping, visited the "Echoes of a Golden Age: Macro Events through the Micro Visions of Macao's Legendary Contemporary Artists" exhibition. The exhibition aimed to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China and the 25th anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland. Sands China invited nine outstanding Macao artists to present the exhibition, showcasing Macao's unique cultural charm and commemorating the historical aspect of the "Golden Age Return." Some exhibits included published representative philatelic items along with their original works, displaying the patriotic sentiments of local artists.
Local artists Lin Zien and Wu Weijian elaborately explained the creative process and underlying meanings of each artwork to the faculty and students. At a macro level, the artists presented unique perspectives and reflections on Macao and the world through the imagery and profound themes of their works. By skillfully integrating elements of Macao's historical transformations, humanistic features, and natural landscapes into their paintings, they delved deep into Macao's historical and cultural explorations while reflecting thoughtfully on contemporary social phenomena. These works not only showcased the artists' exquisite skills but also deeply reflected the unique charm and cultural heritage of Macao as a city. Through their individual styles and languages, they collectively weaved a vibrant tapestry of contemporary Macao art. On a micro level, the artists focused on detailed portrayals and emotional expressions, using delicate brushstrokes and vivid colors to capture the nuances of life and imbue ordinary objects with extraordinary meanings. Finally, the artists engaged in lively exchanges with the students present, sharing their creative experiences and offering valuable advice and guidance, encouraging students to dare to experiment and innovate. They emphasized the close connection between art and life, viewing art as a means to reflect life and express emotions, asserting that only by immersing oneself in life and understanding it can one create truly lively artistic works.
"Echoes of a Golden Age: Macro Events through the Micro Visions of Macao's Legendary Contemporary Artists" was not just an artistic feast but also a cultural exchange and collision. It showcased the elegance and talent of Macao's contemporary artists while allowing us to sense the subtle relationship and strong patriotic sentiments between art and the era, macro and micro perspectives.
