Three Doctoral Students in Music from the City University of Macau Selected for the Taiwan Society for Ethnomusicology Academic Symposium

Recently, three doctoral students in Music from the Faculty of Innovation and Design at the City University of Macau—Shen Yutian, Wang Haitao, and Kou Jia—have been successfully selected to participate in the 2025 Taiwan Society for Ethnomusicology Academic Symposium under the careful guidance of their supervisors, Professors Dai Dingcheng and Jian Qiaozhen. Focusing on the historical review and future development of traditional music, the symposium has attracted scholars from various regions across the strait.

The three doctoral students each have their own research focus: Wang Haitao explores the characteristics of music research in two cities through “Two Paradigms of Chinese Urban Music Research—A Review, Discussion, and Comparative Study of the Musical Documents of Shanghai and Macau.” Shen Yutian, centering on the intangible cultural heritage inheritor Ou Junxiang, delves into the living heritage transmission in “The Historical Tradition and Contemporary Inheritance of Di Shui Nan Yin in Macau.” Kou Jia examines cultural identity in regional music through “Cultural Adaptation and Consciousness of Urban Art Music in Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan—A Case Study of Two Compositions by Hsu Chang-hui and Lam Leung-pai.”

This selection and inclusion highlight the solid foundation in the field of ethnomusicology research of the young scholars from the City University of Macau under the guidance of the two expert supervisors, and contribute to the cross-regional dialogue and exploration of traditional music research.
