Recently, Professor Dai Dingcheng, a distinguished music scholar and doctoral advisor in Art Studies at the Faculty of Innovation and Design, City University of Macau, was invited by the School of Arts at South China University of Technology and the Graduate Division of Xinghai Conservatory of Music to deliver academic lectures.
At South China University of Technology—a prominent member of China’s “985” universities—Professor Dai inaugurated the university’s Arts Week with a lecture titled “Modal Music and the Stylistic Traits of European Renaissance Works.” That same afternoon, he delivered another lecture at Xinghai Conservatory of Music on “Macau’s Musical Traditions and Cultural Innovation in the Greater Bay Area.”
Both lectures were thought-provoking and insightful. Drawing upon Macau’s unique cultural synthesis—where “Western music flowed eastward and Chinese music moved southward”—Professor Dai first traced the stylistic development of early Western music in Europe at SCUT. He then turned to Macau’s urban musical heritage, reflecting on its continuity and transformation over the past three decades at Xinghai. His lectures combined academic rigor with an engaging and personable style, resonating deeply with the audience.
The sessions were warmly received by students, scholars, and professors alike, including attendees who traveled from cities such as Beijing and Yunnan to attend. The vibrant Q&A segments that followed each lecture further stimulated scholarly dialogue, creating a rich and enthusiastic academic atmosphere.
