On 23rd October, Professor Wong ZhiWen, Dean of the School of Music of Tainan National University of the Arts (Tainan National University of the Arts), gave a lecture entitled ‘Methodology of Erhu Cavity Research - Taking Ah Bing's “Reflections of the Moon in the Two Fountains” as an Example’ to the PhD students. The seminar was organised by FIAD, with a speech by Mr. Po-Hsun WANG (Executive Associate Dean of FIAD), and moderated by Prof. Dai Dingcheng.
The seminar centred on the structure, characteristics and tuning methods of the famous Erhu piece ‘Reflections of the Moon in Two Fountains’. Professor Wong gave a detailed explanation on the method of sound measurement, the way of cutting, and the comparison of the cavities, so that the audience had a certain understanding of the cavities and related knowledge. At the same time, Professor Wong emphasised that this method is in fact a return to analysis from quantitative to perceptual research. Finally, Prof Dai concluded the seminar. He pointed out that this method has opened up new perspectives and approaches from subjective perception to objective analysis, and has caused academics and folk performers to think about the different treatments of musical works.
The Q&A session was very interactive and lively.
