Four Students from the Faculty of Innovation and Design at City University of Macau Selected for the Third National University Students Art Exhibition

The Faculty of Innovation and Design at City University of Macau is pleased to announce that four of its students have been selected for the Third National University Students Art Exhibition following the final round of evaluation. The selected students are master's student (Class of 2024) Lu Haoran, doctoral students (Class of 2024) Mao Xinxing and Yang Nan, and doctoral student (Class of 2023) Xu Shenzi. Their outstanding achievements reflect the Faculty's excellence in artistic talent cultivation, creative practice, and professional education, while also demonstrating the students' solid artistic foundation and strong spirit of innovation.

The National University Students Art Exhibition is one of China's most influential professional exhibitions dedicated to university students. Serving as an important platform for showcasing contemporary student artworks, the exhibition is recognized for its academic rigor, professional standards, and exemplary significance. The successful selection of four students from the Faculty of Innovation and Design not only recognizes their individual artistic exploration and creative accomplishments but also highlights the Faculty's continued commitment to high-quality arts education, practice-oriented learning, and innovative talent development.

The selected works encompass diverse themes and distinctive artistic styles, illustrating the students' active engagement with the transformation of traditional artistic resources, responses to contemporary social issues, and the development of personal artistic language.

Lu Haoran: Contemplating Mountains as Clouds Rise

The work reconstructs and reinterprets the landscape traditions of the Song and Yuan dynasties. By deconstructing and reorganizing classical landscape elements - including cliffs, pavilions, gardens, rivers, and bridges - and employing atmospheric washes together with subtle ochre coloration, the artist creates an illusory spatial environment where reality and imagination coexist. It also transcends the conventional linear perspective of traditional Chinese landscape painting and offers a contemporary reinterpretation of classical spatial concepts through restrained yet expressive brushwork.

Mao Xinxing: Forged by Nature: Industrial Imprints

The work draws inspiration from the ecological transformation of former industrial sites. Through the deconstruction and reconfiguration of spatial memories from multiple ecological restoration projects, the work incorporates industrial components such as steel frames, pipelines, beams, and fragments of walls to construct a visually compelling composition. It transforms the process of converting industrial heritage into ecological space into a powerful artistic narrative, reflecting profound concerns with urban regeneration, ecological restoration, and the transformation of industrial civilization.

Yang Nan: Cultivating Dreams in the Cloud: Living Up to Youth

Yang's work was also selected for the exhibition. The work reflects the young artist's dedication to artistic pursuit and commitment to continuous self-improvement, further exemplifying the Faculty's effectiveness in fostering both professional competence and artistic accomplishment.

Xu Shenzi: Echoes of Autumn in Three Movements

This work takes eggplants as its subject and adopts a three-tier compositional structure. Integrating the traditional language of bird-and-flower painting with contemporary compositional concepts, the work captures the fleeting movement of eggplant plants swaying in the autumn breeze, conveying poetic rhythms of nature and a vivid sense of life while demonstrating innovative expression rooted in traditional techniques.

The selection of these four students for the Third National University Students Art Exhibition represents another significant achievement in the Faculty's talent cultivation efforts. Looking ahead, the Faculty of Innovation and Design will continue to uphold its educational philosophy of "promoting teaching through artistic creation and fostering growth through practice". By further leveraging its disciplinary strengths, deepening educational reform, and enhancing the quality of talent development, the Faculty aims to support more young artists in showcasing their creativity on broader professional platforms and making meaningful contributions to the high-quality development of art and design education.
