Hosted by the Faculty of Innovation and Design of the City University of Macau, the "Creative Links & Youth Walking Together" — Macao-Taiwan Youth Urban Design Dialogue and Exchange Forum was successfully held and concluded from May 30 to 31 in Macao. This event gathered faculty members and youth representatives from various universities in Taiwan, along with teachers and students from the Faculty of Innovation and Design, to engage in in-depth academic and practical exchanges centered around urban space, cultural and creative design, brand strategy, and cultural heritage protection.
On the morning of May 30, the Forum officially commenced at the Taipa Campus of City University of Macau. In his welcome remarks, Wang Po-Hsun, Executive Associate Dean of the Faculty of Innovation and Design, noted that a city is not merely an aggregation of buildings, but also a carrier of culture and history. He encouraged young people from both sides to seize this opportunity to exchange ideas, inspire creativity, and empower cultural heritage through design. Following the opening remarks, Prof. Wang Zhong, Director of the Cross-Strait Cultural Exchange Research Centre, introduced Macau's unique geographical and cultural context. Assistant Professor Liu Jing, Programme Director of the Master of Design Programme, presented an overview of City University of Macau and the Faculty of Innovation and Design. Assistant Professor Kang Ni then facilitated an ice-breaking session, fostering interaction and communication among participating students. The programme continued with a Youth Academic Exchange Forum, where representatives from City University of Macau, Shih Hsin University, and Ming Chuan University, together with renowned brand strategy consultant Mr. Wang Hsiang-Cheng, delivered engaging presentations. Topics included campus life, academic research, and brand design in Macau and Taiwan. The session concluded with lively discussions and interactive Q&A exchanges, providing participants with valuable opportunities for learning and cross-cultural dialogue.
On the afternoon of the 30th and the 31st, the delegation delved into the Historic Centre of Macao (including World Heritage sites like the Ruins of St. Paul's and the Macao Museum), as well as Taipa and Coloane, for on-site cultural guided tours. The itinerary also included a visit to the Macao landmark—the Macao Tower—to view the "Resurgence of Elegance: Macao Imagery Creation Activity Exhibition" and enjoy sightseeing, followed by visits to the Macau Fisherman's Wharf and the Beijing Tong Ren Tang Experience Center to taste herbal cuisine, offering a comprehensive experience of Macao's unique East-meets-West urban planning and World Heritage charm.
Youth representatives from Taiwan who participated in the event also shared their abundant reflections at the conclusion. Student representatives from Taiwanese universities successively expressed that this trip completely shattered the limitations of previous "photos-only" independent travels. Through the educational explanations of "design originates from life" by the Faculty of Innovation and Design, and the on-site comparison between the Portuguese heritage in the old urban area and the bustling streetscapes, everyone profoundly realized the importance of transforming cultural heritage into contemporary urban design. Many students also mentioned that the culturally rich imagery art exhibition, the Tong Ren Tang herbal cuisine, and the stroll along Rua do Cunha all left deep impressions. Although the tight schedule made it slightly regrettable not to be able to slowly explore this place with its profound historical heritage, it also heightened their anticipation of having the opportunity to revisit this charming city of East-West fusion in the future.
The organizer stated that this event not only successfully built an academic bridge in the fields of design and creativity between Macao and Taiwan, but also enhanced the profound friendship between the youth of both sides. Members of the delegation successively boarded flights back to Taiwan on the evening of the 31st, bringing the activity to a perfect conclusion amidst passionate cultural resonance and warm youth interaction.
