Professor Kong Yilong Zhou’s Lecture on Dynasty instrumental music culture



The School of Innovative Design of City University of Macau will hold an academic lecture entitled "Application of Five Tones in Zhou Dynasty Chime" on 21 November 2024 (Thursday) from 10:00 to 13:00 in Multimedia Room A203, Student Activity Center. The lecture will be delivered by Professor Kong Yilong, Dean of School of Music, South China Normal University.

Professor Kong will delve into the application of pentatonic scales in Zhou instrumental music and its musical significance, analyze the temperament characteristics of major instruments of the Zhou dynasty, such as chime bells and guqin, and explore how these instruments create unique musical expressions through pentatonic scales. The lecture is part of the Guangdong-Macao Doctoral Forum in Musicology, which aims to promote the exchange and cooperation of musical culture between the two places. Professor Kong's lecture will provide a valuable academic exchange opportunity for the music community, and has important enlightening and guiding significance for scholars and students in the fields of ancient Chinese music culture, music archaeology and music pedagogy.

Professor Dai Dingcheng, PhD supervisor of musicology of City University of Macau, presided over the lecture. After the lecture, Professor Kong Yilong had an in-depth exchange with the teachers and students, and jointly discussed the academic value and modern significance of the ritual music culture of the Zhou Dynasty.
