Faculty of Innovation and Design Students Win Two Bronze Awards at the 7th SGADC Singapore Sands Art and Design Competition

Recently, the results of the 7th SGADC Singapore Sands Art and Design Competition 2026 were officially announced. Students from the Bachelor of Arts in Design programme at the Faculty of Innovation and Design (FIAD), City University of Macau, stood out among numerous global entries with their solid professional skills and innovative design thinking, winning two Bronze Awards.

Initiated by the Singapore Sands Art Museum, the 7th SGADC was co-organized by the Singapore Fine Arts Research Association (SGFARA) and the International Art Development Promotion Association (International Art Development Promotion Center). Centered on the theme "Design Healing · The Tenderness of Fifteen Minutes", the competition focused on health concepts and urban life, echoing Singapore's vision of a "Happy and Healthy City" and the "15-minute city" concept to promote health through design. The Bronze Award recognizes solid, well-thought-out, and thoroughly conceived works evaluated by the international jury.

  Highlights of the Award-Winning Works

Li Jianxin — The Pause Button in the City

Design Concept:

Closely aligning with the core theme of "Design Healing", the work adopts "pause" as its central concept to respond to the mental tension and pace-related anxiety of urban dwellers. It attempts to create resting gaps within dense urban environments.

Color Application & Healing Effect:

Under the guidance of Asst. Prof. Liu Jing in the Color Theory course, the work avoids high-saturation, high-contrast visual stimuli and instead utilizes a low-saturation, softly transitioned palette (such as mist blue, warm gray, off-white, light wood, and earth tones). This color strategy serves the core goal of "pause and healing", effectively easing visual and psychological stress.

Liu Ruiqi, Chen Jiahui & Huang Wanxin — Timer Aromatherapy Humidifier

Design Concept:

Pushing beyond the boundaries of traditional humidifiers, the design incorporates the "Pomodoro Technique" at its core, using fragrance as an invitation and light and rhythm as guides to convey the idea that "every fragrance carries a story and a memory".

Functional & Interactive Innovation:

The hardware features sliding controls for focus intervals, four-stage humidity adjustment, and a white noise mode. Through a companion mobile app, users can switch between visual scenes like ocean and sky while adjusting ambient lighting and mist intensity. The UI design features a dedicated sprite named "Dotti", making focus time both productive and relaxing.

  Winners' Remarks

Li Jianxin:

"I am deeply surprised and grateful for this honor. It reinforces my belief that design can do more than resolve functional issues—it can respond to human emotions and the pace of urban living. Special thanks to the Faculty and Asst. Prof. Liu Jing for her guidance in color theory, which taught me that color is a language acting directly on perception and psychology. The curriculum transformed my design mindset to address real human needs."

Liu Ruiqi, Chen Jiahui, and Huang Wanxin:

"From initial inspiration to final project implementation, we refined our work under the dedicated guidance of Teacher Zhao Yulin. During preparation, Teacher Zhao provided professional guidance on everything from design concepts to functional details, along with warm encouragement. This international contest not only enhanced our design skills and creative thinking but also taught us the power of teamwork, communication, and adaptability. We express our sincere gratitude to our advisor and the university for providing excellent resources and platforms".

Winning these two awards highlights the ongoing vitality of healing-oriented and human-centered design in addressing contemporary urban issues, as well as the international jury's strong recognition of the educational achievements and creative excellence of the Faculty of Innovation and Design.
