The 2024 Society for Ethnomusicology ROC Academic Symposium will be held on November 23 at the International Conference Hall of National Taiwan Normal University. The theme of this conference is "Contemporary Adaptation to Traditional Music", focusing on exploring the impact of traditional music on preserving existing music culture in the face of changes in contemporary society and environment. A total of 8 papers were accepted for the seminar, including 2 selected papers from Peng Jingyao and Shen Yutian, doctoral candidates in the field of musicology at the faculty of Innovation and Design, City University of Macau in Grade 2023. They discussed research on ethnic music from different perspectives and angles, in order to explain the contemporary value and innovative practices of ethnic music.
Peng Jingyao's research "A Study of Cantonese Opera Societies in Macau——Taking the Chunfeng Opera Society, the Cantonese Opera Training Center of the Neighborhood Association Federation, and the Zhenhuasheng Cantonese Opera Society as Examples" is based on a holistic view of Macau society, observing the overall ecological profile of Cantonese opera clubs in Macau and providing prospects and opinions on their future development; Shen Yutian's research "Contemporary Trends in the Construction of Chinese Opera Music Discourse System: Taking Tang Xianzu's" The Purple Hairpin "versions of Kun, Cantonese, and Gan as examples" analyzes the modern adaptation paths of traditional opera, in order to reflect on the contemporary trends and value manifestations of the construction of Chinese opera music discourse system. Both students' papers were written under the guidance of Professor Dai Dingcheng from the Faculty of Innovation and Design. Professor Dai will also be a special guest speaker on Ethnomusicology research.
The Society for Ethnomusicology ROC Academic Symposium has been held for multiple consecutive sessions, bringing together experts and scholars from diverse academic backgrounds, with the aim of promoting exchanges and dialogue among ethnic music research scholars, further deepening cultural exchanges between the cross strait and four regions, providing worthful value and inspiration for the inheritance and development of ethnic music and the sharing and mutual learning of world civilizations.
