On 27th March, Plymouth University Professor, Robert Brown, carried out a field investigation in the Iao Hon neighborhood with the PhD students in the Faculty of Urban Management and Studies at the City University of Macau, combining the content of the courses “Urban Renewal Theory Frontier” and “Urban Sustainable Design Theory”.
In this session, following the teaching of the classic urban planning theory by Prof. Brown, the students were instructed to apply the interview method to creatively survey the Iao Hon locals. For example, students could advise the neighborhood residents to draw mental maps of Iao Hon in their subjective senses of memories. The results gained from this viewpoint are fruitful and varied, containing a variety of useful information for the neighborhood’s renewal planning. The investigation gives the students a better understanding of the status and the demands of the community, hence it provides the bedrock for the researching, designing, and practicing for
the next stage.
