Recently, the midterm course exhibition for the first-year master's course "Research on Chinese Calligraphy and Seal Carving Creation", organized by the Faculty of Innovation and Design at City University of Macau, officially opened on the G/F of the K.C. Wong Building. The exhibition is an important periodic report on the teaching of this course for first-year master's students and attracted many faculty members and students from the university to visit.
The exhibition features 17 calligraphy and seal-carving works by 17 first-year master's students. The works cover a rich range of subjects and diverse calligraphic scripts, including seal, clerical, regular, running, and cursive scripts. On display are both refined and elegant small framed pieces and vertical scrolls, as well as majestic large-scale handscrolls and large-character horizontal banners that showcase the powerful spirit of calligraphy and reflect the students' in-depth study of epigraphic texts. These works demonstrate not only the students' understanding and inheritance of the spirit of traditional brush-and-ink but also their thinking and practice in the early stage of exploring their personal artistic language, reviewing the gains and growth they have made in calligraphy copying and creation since enrollment.
This midterm course exhibition is not only a display of students' achievements but also a direct embodiment of the teaching philosophy of the course "Research on Chinese Calligraphy and Seal Carving Creation". The course focuses on guiding students to consolidate their professional foundations through copying and creation and to deepen their academic understanding through research and critical thinking. Course instructor Liu Huahua expressed the hope that periodic exhibitions will help test teaching outcomes, encourage students to learn from one another's strengths through mutual observation, and always maintain reverence for and love of traditional art, innovating while inheriting and growing through practice.
At the exhibition site, faculty and students stopped before the works one after another to exchange creative insights and technical experiences. The exhibition provides first-year master's students with an opportunity to showcase their phased learning outcomes and builds a platform for exchange and mutual learning among faculty and students, playing a positive role in improving the quality of the university's art talent cultivation and demonstrating the outcomes of its art education.
