The Faculty of Innovation and Design held a thematic lecture titled "Design Decisions in the Age of AI: Benevolent Emotional Design Decision-Making" on the afternoon of October 15, 2025, at HG03, Ho Yin Convention Centre, City University of Macau. The lecture was honored to have Mr. LI Chao from the Creative Department of Alibaba Group, Ant Group, and Macau Pass as the keynote speaker, attracting enthusiastic participation from numerous undergraduate, master's, doctoral students, and faculty members, with a lively atmosphere on site. As one of the events celebrating the Faculty's 10th Anniversary, the lecture commenced with an opening address by Executive Associate Dean Po-Hsun WANG, was hosted by Associate Professor Yujie REN, attended by Assistant Professor Xin HU, and other faculty colleagues.
Centering on the rapidly developing context of artificial intelligence, Mr. LI Chao, drawing on his extensive practical experience at Macau Pass—a leading Macau financial technology enterprise—elucidated how to integrate "benevolence" and "emotion" into the core of design decision-making. He emphasized that in an era where AI tools significantly enhance design efficiency, designers should all the more return to the human-centered essence, using technology to convey care and warmth, thereby creating products and services that are not only intelligent but also resonate deeply with people.
Through captivating case studies, Mr. LI Chao demonstrated how to apply the concept of emotional design to specialized fields such as fintech and payment services, allowing attendees to gain a profound understanding of the practical pathways and far-reaching impact of "benevolent design." The live Q&A session featured frequent interaction, where Mr. LI Chao also engaged in in-depth exchanges and discussions with students on future trends in AI and design, sharing personal insights.
This lecture provided a valuable platform for learning and exchange, not only broadening perspectives on the role of design in the AI era but also inspiring innovative thinking on the integration of technology and humanities. The Faculty of Innovation and Design extends its sincere gratitude to Mr. LI Chao for his insightful sharing and to all participants for their support. The Faculty remains committed to organizing high-quality academic events to foster closer ties between design education and the industry.
